Greetings!
We are a little less than a month away from #MyFreedomDay. CNN's Leif Coorlim has shared with me the theme for this year’s campaign, which is as follows:
"This year’s #MyFreedomDay focuses on the “Freedom to Learn.” It aims to foster empathy among students by highlighting the harsh reality that more than 12 million children worldwide are denied an education due to forced labor and modern slavery. By understanding education is a fundamental right - not a privilege - students can connect with the struggles of their peers who are trapped in situations where learning is impossible. Through education, both the free and the oppressed can envision a future where every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and break the cycle of exploitation."
In addition to the campaign, here are several student-developed resources available for anti-slavery education:
- Student-led group Playbook: For help planning year-round events at your schools, here is a comprehensive guide for students and their teacher facilitators for student advocacy in their communities.
- Ethical Consumption Guide for Teens: Part of taking a stand on the issue is voting with your wallets, influencing your families and peers to shop thoughtfully while thinking about how lives are affected on the other side of your products.
- See junior Hana Gertsacov’s draft of teacher materials here on this website. Please let me know if you have feedback for her.
- Senior Kaixuan Guo’s paper pg 378 “Ideal Human Trafficking Victims versus Reality: A Content Analysis of US-Based NGO Websites”
- Fill out this survey for high school senior Ellie Ryan.
Please don’t forget to register your #MyFreedomDay event here.
You can also register for Generation Global's #MyFreedomDay Dialogues, here. Enter Event code MYFREEDOMDAY. See the event page.
One last thing, I’ve included my previous email below which is full of ideas on how you can get involved. Also, expect an email from Mr. Coorlim in the coming days with more information about how to get your students featured on CNN International.
Of course, feel free to contact me at vmcdaniel@aischool.org at any time for questions on #MyFreedomDay and anti-slavery lesson planning throughout the year.
Best,
